The Nature Reserve is committed to the sustainability of Lake Atitlán and its biodiversity with the certainty that humans are and reflect the richness of their environment.  This privately funded project is an economically viable alternative to the traditional uses of land and natural resources in the area.

Since the 1980s we have planted more than 200,000 trees in the valley of San Buenaventura with special emphasis on trees that provide food and shelter for wildlife (Ajachel edulis, Belotia mexicana, Diphysa robinoides and various Quercus).  We have fostered the installation of efficient wood burning stoves in neighboring communities, garbage recycling, and the use of solar energy and biodigestors.  We are part and support “Todos por el Lago” [All for the Lake] in their efforts to promote conservation, eliminate pollution and make sustainable the use of the Lake Basin’s resources.

At present the Reserve has the following facilities:

  1. Visitors Center with information on the natural and social history of the Lake Basin, it has a visitor reception area, a cafeteria and souvenir and bookshop, an area for seminars, workshops, exhibits and shows.  There is ample parking for both buses and private vehicles.
